9807 ' Single Manual Harpsichord after Kirkmann by John Barnes, 1963.
This unusual and interesting instrument was made by John Barnes when his son Peter was only 3! It has had one owner from new and has since been on a 2-year hiring in London. Peter Barnes serviced and re-voiced it in 2007.
The case, lid and stand are made from Mahogany, recycled from a bank in
Gilford, with an angled lid over the keyboard. There are four pedals, as was
the fashion in the 1960's, which operate each 8', the 4', and buff stops.
The keyboard was made for a five octave grand piano by Kirkmann and rescued from a furniture store. The jacks are wooden, of traditional design and the layout and dimensions on bridges, nuts and soundboard are copied from the Kirkmann harpsichord which John Barnes owned at the time.
Under the soundboard is a specially made iron frame which substitutes for
Kirkmann's wooden case members. The tails of the 4-foot strings run through
holes in the 8-foot bridge and hitch onto the main hitch-rail below the
8-foot strings. This leaves the soundboard free to vibrate much in the
manner of an instrument without a 4-foot. The tuning is very stable and
there is very little case twist.
Offers considered in the region of £3,000 - £4,000.
