3494 S

Single Manual Harpsichord by Huw Saunders 2000 with 2 x 8’ + 4’ registers. The instrument was bought from new direct from the maker, Huw Saunders, in 2006 and is reluctantly being sold for reasons of space.

This European harpsichord is Huw Saunders own design, but the proportions and shape are based on later Flemish and French examples, especially those made by Albert Delin. Huw's aim was to make a useful harpsichord with a large compass (G to f''') three registers and buff stop. He wanted it to sound Franco-Flemish, but to look English; hence the case is made of poplar and veneered in burr walnut with cross-bandings and stringing in the English style. The sound is large and open with a reedy bass and singing treble. It is a little smaller than the usual late English harpsichord (2.27m long), and a good deal less heavy.’

A sister instrument, made by Huw, was recently featured on Lucy Worlsey’s BBC Mozart documentary. The player was Steven Devine, and the instrument can be seen and heard at around 1:20 here.

The instrument remains in perfect condition. It has proved easy to maintain and tune, and always rewarding to play.
