Soprano bowed psaltery with bow, case and tuning lever. Supplied with bow, this simple instrument can provide hours of fun and is easy to learn. The psaltery is held in the left hand pointing away with the widest end resting against the chest. The bow is held centrally and the strings are bowed between the pins with naturals to the right and semitones to the left.
The psaltery was developed in the near East and filtered into Europe during the crusades. It is regularly illustrated from the12th century onwards and derives its name from the Greek word 'Psalterion'. The modern day bowed version of this instrument fulfills a useful role in both folk and early music. The shape varies enormously and can be triangular, square or trapezoidal, but a bowed psaltery lends itself naturally to being triangular with the diatonic notes of the scale on the right hand and the semitones on the left.
Includes a tuning key, bow and padded bag.
