Five famous faces from comedy, radio, television and journalism rekindle their relationship with their first love this August on Sky Arts 1 HD. First Love will see Katie Derham, Lenny Henry, Janet Street-Porter, Mark Radcliffe and Meera Syal rediscover the passion they once had for music before forging their now successful careers.

Each week, a different celebrity will retrain in the field of their ‘first love’, learning and relearning long forgotten skills from childhood.  Janet Street-Porter will train on baroque recorder, and broadcaster Katie Derham retrains in classical violin.  Mark Radcliffe takes on the drums, whilst Lenny Henry and Meera Syal exercise their vocal chords, in soul and jazz singing respectively. Each star will work with a professional mentor to rediscover their dormant talent, before finally showcasing their newly reignited passion in a live performance at a prestigious venue in front of a paying audience.

The series reveals the forgotten dreams of the stars in their younger years, as they revisit their past and talk to their parents, old friends and school teachers. Discover what motivated their ‘first love’ and how their lives and careers ended up taking a different path from their musical dreams. Meeting musicians and experts, they will get the chance to immerse themselves in different artistic worlds and discover the professional nature of their chosen sound and instrument before their big live performance.   “Everyone wonders about the path their lives would have taken were it for a different decision – First Love gives these celebrities the opportunity to revisit that,” comments John Cassy, channel director of Sky Arts. “It’s absolutely fascinating to watch some very talented people in their own field turn their hand to something completely different. Not only does it take them out of their comfort zones, but it offers us compelling insight into their own childhood and personalities. It’s riveting watching.”
