MEDIAEVAL/TUDOR HARP WORKSHOP with Sarah Deere-Jones
The Coach House, Victoria Road 10am-12noon
We
will warm up with some simple finger exercises for all standards to
play together. We will then talk about the design and features of early
Medieval and Tudor harps, their history across Britain, and how to adapt
standard lever harp technique to them. We will then explore some Medieval and
Tudor repertoire and play some music together, either by ear or using music
provided. There is no need to own a reproduction Medieval/Tudor harp for this
workshop as all music can be played on modern lever or pedal harps.
But if you are bringing a reproduction harp, please tune it in C major
(A440) but be prepared to re-tune during the workshop, (if you are a
beginner, don't worry help and advice will be available!).
TICKETS £8 -
Includes light refreshments.

TALK – ‘THE HISTORY OF THE HARP’
Salts Mill 3pm-4pm
Using
colour slides, Sarah Deere-Jones illustrates the history of this
fascinating instrument from the ancient civilisations of the mediterranean,
through to the earliest European and British triangular framed harps, their
development into double and triple strung harps, their expansion into South
American culture and then their final transformation into the elaborate
and complicated double action orchestral harps of today. With
illustrations from Mesopatamian plaques, Egyptian tomb paintings,
European stone slabs and Medieval manuscripts, and Peruvian church
panels to19th century English oil paintings, this lecture demonstrates the
hugely varied and intriguing history of the harp.
